Directmusic without DirectX?

is it possible to install directmusic and directsound (so that my sound will work) without installing the whole of directX?

i am looking for the versions which came with directX 7 if its possible to do so^
[and its 98SE w/ 98lite 'micro' installation]

can any soundcard (ie that can actually play music) work w/o directsound/directmusic?

mb26,

DirectX is Microsoft's proprietary software for functionality and enhancement of video games. I don't know why you're asking about Directmusic in relation to that. Are you trying to install a software application that's prompting you to install "Directmusic"?

DirectMusic is a part of DirectX.. like DirectDraw for example.. it handles the sound.. and i'm pretty sure i need it for my sound to function..
What is DirectMusic?
i want my sound to function, but i dont want to install the whole of DirectX..

now, i am -guessing- that M$ dont allow u to download it separately? is there any 3rd party thing that might let me.. or what could i delete that i wouldn't be using?

"First details of DirectX 9 indicate that it will include managed wrappers for Direct3D 9, DirectDraw 7, DirectSound, DirectPlay and DirectInput 8. This means no DirectShow and no DirectMusic. It may seem odd to you that Microsoft would support DirectDraw and DirectSound over the latter two; it certainly seems odd to me."
does this mean DirectMusic is not included w/ DX9 or just it isn't updated?

DirectSound replaced DirectMusic with DX9. There's no way around it, if you want to play something you'll need DirectX. The OS can't handle the codecs any other way.
