How do you know if a OS is bootable?

I was told that A OEM version of a OS was bootable, so I got xp home and it wasnt bootable. How do I tell if a OS is bootable?

If you're refering to the CD being bootable, all (legal) copies of Windows XP should be bootable. Make sure that your BIOS is set for the optical drive to be the first boot device.

you mean cd-rom, not optical drive?

1. A CD-ROM drive is considered an optical drive (as are DVD drives, burners, etc)

2. Yes OEM copies are legal, but in the case of specialized disks such as those that come with Dells, they can only be installed on the PC they came with.

2 reasons - the license agreement, and they are frequently locked to the machine's bios.
