clockgen

i think this would be in the right forum if not, please move it.

i have read on some forums and articles about people using clockgens to get a higher clock speed. from what i have read and figured out i'm assuming a glockgen allows a user to change the speed of a cpu while booted into windows. is this right?

if so then why couldn't you just make the changes in BIOS? is a clockgen better or what?

thanks!

Clockgen is from the same folks that make CPU-Z. I've never used it cuz I prefer to make oc changes in the bios. Looks like it allows for fsb, memory and vid card adjustments from within Windows. It is motherboard specific so one would need to be sure to download the correct version or you could end up with some major conflicts I'd think.

Clockgen is most useful for computers without built-in overclocking capabilities (i.e. desktops from OEMs and all types of laptops). Here's an article about laptop overclocking using ClockGen:

so you could use it to OC for example a Dell computer. do they work with all computers, like gateway and dell or just some?

as i was reading the post for the WR P4 OC of 7.2Ghz the guy, nugger (i think), said he needed one to get further. why would you need one if you can OC from BIOS?

Take a look at the link in my thread. You won't find Dell or Gateway systems listed, only motherboard brands. The bios in prebuilt machines do not allow overclocking.

You can't overclock Dell or Gateway systems per se, but many manufacturers use custom-built but still industry-standard boards from companies like Asus, Foxconn, and ECS. If you can figure out the board model, you could probably find a clockgen for it. Also, as you can see in my link, it's possible to overclock laptops if there is a clockgen for your laptop's particular ODM kit.

That's interesting, tfh. I'm curious to know if anyone has made it work with a prebuilt.

One thing to note is that the article only recommends overclocking laptops with laptop CPUs. It says it's a bad idea to overclock those with desktop processors.

Probably for heat reasons. I wonder how the machine will act when you oc a mobile processor that has the speed reduction feature (whatever it's called) built in.
