Any specific industry? Need to design houses, cars, high rise office buildings or furniture?

Turbo CAD has been around for a lot of years. And, being a fraction of Autocad's price, it's also more inline with many budgets:

I've used both turboCAD and autoCAD. If it's not for professional work, just grab whichever is cheaper. Personally, I prefer autoCAD, though.

I use MicroStation and AutoCAD at work, both are good but very expensive.
If it's not business related get the cheapest.

What are you working on?

I used AutoCad Release 13 and 14 during High School (I'm sure they are way past that by now). It's a very nice program, but it does cost some $$$.

If you are a student you should be able to get a very healthy discount on AutoCad, we use interns in the summer, some of them got Acad2005 for $199 from the GA Tech store.

Depending on your needs either 2d or 3d, for 2d around $200 go with TurboCAD, but for 3d go with RhinoCAD (www.rhinocad.com) it is $895 but will create beautiful 3d surfaces comaprable to high-end stuff like UG, Pro-e, IDEAS etc. The downside is that it is not a soild modeler like Solidworks or Inventor. but those two will cost you about 5k. But if this is only for personal use Solidworks use to have a deal for students tol get free student versions, but with a student seat you can't use it for saleable models and drawings.

I too have been looking for a good, cheap CAD program for a very long time. I have tried quite a few and finally found this one.

ProgeCAD LT 2006

I am drawing a blank on where I heard about it, but I have been using it for a while and it very much resembles the AutoCAD layout. The LT version is free but the Professional version has more features and it is priced relatively low compared to other programs.

I haven't really checked who sponsors this forum but from everyones posts I understand that using software which has not been purchased is a no no. So I won't make any such suggestions. When I was in uni I go a free "student version" of SolidWorks. If they don't offer it to you at your uni, try emailing or calling CAD software reps and request a free/discounted student version.
If you plan on working with CAD in the industry, you might want to check what the popular ones are so that you'll experience with it. I have lots of experience with Unigraphics but nobody outside the aircraft/automotive industry uses it.
Unigraphics and Catia are very good but are overkill for your needs.
SolidWorks is growing in popularity (although i really prefer Unigraphics).
Some other CAD software:
ProEngineer
Solid Edge

I needed some experience with Autocad, signed up for one of the Georgia Technical schools and bought a student version for a really cheap price to use for homework.
Can't be used for professional stuff and was early enough that it doesn't phone home every time it cranks up.

I've seen some earlier AC on ebay. But it is still pricey.

That picture doesn't come close to demonstrating SW's capabilities. SW is used by RAFAEL (http://www.rafael.co.il)
and they make some good stuff.
