Looks like there is a problem with the new version of msn messenger or there is a hacker. The problem starts when you are chatting with a friend and a message that says something like ".... sent you a ....click here to install a new version..." appear, so you click in that link and after that you cannot connect regulary to the internet and your messenger disconnects frequently and a new message appears saying "are you connected to the internet? If not click here to connect through a free dial-up connection to install the new version....

Sounds like you have installed a nasty dose of autodialer, better start running some antispyware and trojan scans, I have never found antivirus scanners that really home in on autodialers but you can give them a go as well.
Go to control panel and network connections and check to see if you have an additional entry or your normal dial up has been changed in any way.
