Backing up Outlook Express folders & Address Book
Hi,
can you please instruct me on how i can store all the Outlook Express 6 folders (inbox, outbox, sent, deleted or folders i have created in Outlook etc) on a storage device say a cd? Also the Address Book with all its contents. When i Search with Windows Explorer i get : 1. C:\Program Files\Outlook Express and also 2. C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{D6390617-B15A-428A-969C-DD01921BDD50}\Microsoft\Outlook Express Which folder from the two above should i copy on cd so as i can retain all the emails and Address Book and put it back, in case of deletion from the hard disk? Thank you.

#2 is where your mail is stored.
You address book is in C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

Could you please tell me what does the
{D6390617-B15A-428A-969C-DD01921BDD50} mean in the path in #2? |

It represents XP's way of remember your user account within programs that can have multiple identities within the same login. For example, say you login to XP as starcom, well on OE you can use multiple identities. The squiggles represents where to store that particular identities application data.
A more reliable way of searching out where your mailbox data is stored is to open OutlookExpress to the identity you use (or if you use just one default identity, then just open OE) go to Tools > Options > Maintenance and click on the store folder button. Just copy the folder name from the box that pops up. |

The technical name for that is a GUID (Globally Unique Identifier), as Statica said it's a way for Windows to keep track of accounts. Instead of calling it "Starcom's identity", it uses a 128-bit number, since computers like numbers a lot more. A lot of software apps use GUIDs to keep track of accounts, users, locations, app versions, and so on. If you poked around the registry, you would find a lot of GUIDs.
