A lot of Firewire PCI cards come with a basic editor such as Ulead Video Studio SE. It's almost worth buying the card even if you have an onboard Firewire port to get the software.

Some video cams come with editing software. I've usually seen pinnacle bundled with sony and cannon cams.

For around $100 you can get Adobe Premiere Elements - better than anything the competition has to offer (Studio, Video Studio, Video Factory...).

The "Elements" line of Adobe products tends to be a little more simplified. The full version of Adobe Premiere is quite complex, but Adobe Premiere Elements is quite good and not too complicated to figure out. It will take a bit of practice though, just to get to know the software (as with anything else).

If you don't have the patience or time to learn good software, to achieve the results you want, then you probably should return your camera.
Sorry to be blunt, but this is NOT a hobby for the impatient.
I have a feeling even Premiere Elements may be too much for you.
Try Ulead DVD Factory, or Sonic MyDVD.
Most advanced users consider them playskool toys, but they do do basic editing/authoring.

Buy the Firewire card for 15 bucks if you need one anyway and see if the Ulead that it's packed with does the job. It's not Premiere but it should work well enough to get you started.
