How to remove OS from start-up???

Good day,

I have installed XP Pro as an upgrade from Win 98se........when i boot up the comp, i get a choice of 2 OS's.....plus a countdown of 25 seconds 'till it boots up XP.....

.......could anyone suggest a way of deleting this earlier OS?

Many thanks!...........D

It looks like you installed Windows XP Pro in addition to Windows 98, not over it. Do you want to dual boot, or do you just want XP?

If you don't want 98 anymore, I would just do a reinstall and make sure that you repartition and reformat your C: drive.

I only have an upgrade CD of XP...so i need to install 98se first, then upgrade from there.....i install 98se on a fat32 drive, then convert the c: drive to NTFS when i install XP over it....so i'm confused as to why it gives me the option of booting up in 98se (which obviously wouldn't work 'cause it's been wiped off the c: disk in the NTFS format operation....or has it - cue spooky music!)......the annoying thing is, it takes 25 seconds countdown before it chooses the XP option......i've looked in the bios and can't see a setting to reduce this countdown to say 2 seconds, in which case it wouldn't be a problem...cheers!.........D

I don't think you need to have Windows 98 on there already, even if it is an upgrade CD. Past Windows upgrade CDs also work if you put the install disk of the older version of Windows in the CD drive when the installer prompts you for it. I haven't done this with XP Pro, but it should work. I still think the best option is to boot from the Windows XP CD and do a repartition and reformat.

Control Panel->System icon->Advanced tab->Startup and recovery

You can edit the boot.ini file or change the countdown setting.

To upgrade 98 to XP, you have to put the XP CD in when in Windows. If you boot with the CD, it will do a separate installation. I'd personally recommend you make sure you have all your software and back up all your files and wipe it and install XP clean as already described.
