Question Virtual Memory & RAM.

Hello,

I got 512 MB of RAM, the windows xp virtual memory is set by windows and the value is 753 MB. I made an upgrade to my RAM and got 1024 DDR2 (533 MHz)...

The Virtual memory increased to 1521 MB, and I didn't notice any differnce to the performance , also the startup time for windows is the same after the upgrade!!!!

1- Why the Virtual memory increased even I increased RAM size?!
2- Can I disable the virtual memory and stop the OS from accessing the HD(it takes lot of time in comparison with accessing RAM) ? what about the performance after disabling the VM?

Thanks in Advance.

An upgrade from 512 MB to 1024MB will only show a slight increase in performance unless you do video editing and do alot of multi tasking. The computation for virtual memory is [VM = 1.5 * Amt oh Physical RAM]. You can change the virtual memory the way you want. You can improve startup time by trimming your auto-start apps and services. Just load the necessary apps during start-up and services.

Thanks

But about Disabling Virtual memory? can this improve the performance OR it will reduce it?

It is generally recommended that you Not disable VM. Many programs are written to use it. They crash when they can't find it...

Virtual Memory in Windows XP
(great article)

Introduction

"This page attempts to be a stand-alone description for general users of the way Virtual Memory operates in Windows XP. Other pages on this site are written mainly for Windows 98/ME (see Windows 98 & Win ME Memory Management) and, while a lot is in common, there are significant differences in Windows XP."
