encoding avi's
I just got a burner and was trying to encode some avi files I had to svcd or just whatever format so it will play as a dvd. The problem is then encoding is going way to slow and says its gonna take like 5 hours. Im using a program called DVD2SVCD. Does anyone know what im doing wrong or any free programs that are better? I figure 5 hours cant be right.........

first off, are you using a dvd burner or a CD burner, because if its dvd, burn a dvd not a cd, higher quality
second, depending on the file size and computer specs, 5 hours could be correct craig

Well what I want to do is make a normal dvd that is viewable in my home dvd player so of course im using a dvd burner with dvd+r. It is with system 1 in my sig so It should be faster than 5 hours and it was taking even longer on some other program I tried

why are you converting to svcd, tho? didn't the burner come with any burning software (ie sonic mydvd). just open the burning program, put the file in, it will create the menu and you are good to go, and its a dvd, not an svcd.

#1, hobey19 is correct - don't use the svcd format. If you have a DVD burner, use a DVD format. That being said, re-encoding a AVI to DVD compliant MPEG can take time - depending on the length, 5 hours isn't out of the question regardless of how fast your system is. It's dependant on the re-encoder more than anything - a good re-encoder will take time.
#2, if you want it to play in your home DVD player, you'll have to either use a DVD-R or use the DVD+R with DVD-ROM booktype - DVD+R isn't as compatible with home players as DVD-R is, but the DVD-ROM booktype will take care of that issue.

Just get VSO DivX to DVD (it's free).
If you want to get more involve, and have menus, chapters and stuff, then you'll need to learn a good encoder (mainconcept, canopus, cce, or tmpgenc, et al) and a good authoring app. |
