Free DVD playing software

I need some reliable, easy to use DVD playing software for my dad's old compaq laptop.
Does anyone know of some good free software, compatible with most DVD's and with the least possible glitches?

Thank you

fedz

If it's the DVD drive that came with the pc, compaq.com has free software for it.

Free DVD software does exist now. It didn't for a long time. Unfortunately the name escapes me at the moment. When I get home I'll post a link.

I'm pretty sure the bsplayer provides DVD playback. Check it out.

Download the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. It features every conceivable audio and video codec, most with both decoding and encoding capability; your choice of several DVD decoders; and lightweight replacements for QuickTime and RealPlayer.

The one I was thinking of is called Dscaler. It goes along with ReClock. Appearently it produces a better picture than any of the other software players. There has been quite a buzz over it on the AVS Forums. ClipRex looks nice too.

I'm pretty sure that Cliprex is full of malware/spyware etc- read the EULA before you install it. Another old free one I found OK, is here - it is Compaq/DVD Express so it may well work for you.

Old versions like v.4 of the much respected PowerDVD can also be googled
for a free download.
Cheers,
Chris.
