Firefox 1.0.4 Problem

This problem started only after updating to version 1.0.4. Here's my problem:

After not using Firefox for a while (can't really give a value here as to how long it takes) I go to open the browser and it just hangs before loading my homepage, and leave me unable to click or type anything in the browser window except the update icon. I can click that and search for updates till the cows come home, but I can't do anything else. So I then close the browser out, and open it again and all is well. I have uninstalled and reinstalled a few times (I tried through both add/remove programs and the uninstaller included with Firefox to see if it would make a difference, it didn't) hoping that might solve the problem, but no such luck. So then I thought maybe the update feature might be the problem, so I disabled the search for updates upon starting up the browser. That seemed to work, but now after letting the computer idle for a bit I'm having this same problem, and the update icon is back, even though I have that feature disabled.

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Hiya andy,

Does this behaviour ONLY happen with FF or is it with any browser, e-mail, etc...? My first thought is that after a period of inactivity your internet connection is cutting out and then FF has to wait to reconnect when you open it. Just a guess though, as I've never experienced the issue you're describing.

I also haven't upgraded FF yet though. I'm letting folks like you work out the bugs first!

Nope, just with Firefox. I also don't believe it's the connection because I'll have torrents going and IRC connected and no problems there, but when I go to open up Firefox, this happens.

Yeah, things like this are generally why I wait a little while before updating, but unfortunately I didn't do that this time.

Thank you for your response.

Well, it looks like it's just a bug in 1.0.4. I uninstalled 1.0.4, grabbed the 1.0.3 installer off the Mozilla FTP, and installed that and it seems to have done the trick.

How odd... but thanks for the info.
I guess I'll be waiting a little longer to grab the update to 1.0.4 to allow a few more corrections.

That's odd.
I got 1.0.4 the day it came out and I haven't had any problems.
Just a guess but do you need to update any extensions?

I've checked all my themes and extentions and they are all the latest versions.

I found it odd too, because it happened after using 1.0.4 for a few days.

I'm also having the same problem that FF connects for a period and then won't load anything since I got 1.0.4. I tried opening IE and same thing happened, only after FF stoped, not by itslef so I know it is FF related. Everyother program connected perfectly. Have to restart computer just to get browser to run once it happens.

I don't think that it's exactly the same problem as I was having. For me the actual browser application would not startup all the way, whereas for you, it sounds like you have trouble loading sites while browsing the web.

I actually did come up with a solution to this problem after trying 1.0.4 again. And it's similar to what Pam suggested. I uninstalled all themes, extensions, etc. then restarted the browser, installed them all, and it's worked like a charm ever since.
