You're the first party. Internet Explorer is an example of the second party. A popup blocker from Google that runs inside IE for example would be a third party.

I think the way it works is...
Third party technically means a go-between, so in the case of computer software, programs which interact between you (the first party) and your main program (second party) are the third party. Another example is Gamespy arcade, which is a go-between you and whatever games you play. This definition is rather blurry when it comes to exactly what is "ancillary" and what is the "main program," but it's usually relatively well-defined.

Generally, the term "third party" software in regards to a Windows computer refers to any software that's not from Microsoft.

I have always taken it to mean that, in regards to the internet, I am the first party, the website I wish to visit is the second party and the third party as one or more of the following:
Data miners or viruses that are installed on your computer without your knowledge or permission. Popup or under ads that are in a new window. Redirect programs that take you to a website other than the one you wanted. Solicited or unsolicited e-mails from "partners" of a website you may have registered at. Offline I again am the first party, My operating system is the second party and any software I choose to install from any source or that is installed by the software "bundle" along with my operating system, such as AOL , even if it is published by my operating system publisher is the third party.
