Saving and retreiving email

I use OUtlook Express and an email client and I was wondering if there is an easy way to save and then view those emails if needed.

The help page instructions say to compact and then copy the folder (after you meander through your hard drive trying to find the .dbx file).

I did this in the past and was never able to retrieve those files. I just tried it again with my "deleted items" folder, and same problem. I could copy the file but then nothing would open it. From outlook express I can't figure out how to view a files not in its specific list of folders.

I know there is got to be a way.
