Outlook Express "Out of Memory" error

My Outlook Express version 6.00.2900.2810 and WinXP Home SP2 is giving me an "out of memory error" every time I try to retrieve emails from my second ISP ... I have both SBC-DSL and an older Dial-up ISP that I get several emails through everyday ... Outlook Express will always retrieve the ones from my DSL server but after around 10 or less emails from my older mail account I get the error message listed above ...

I have tried to reload IE 6.01 and Outlook Express but it says I have a newer version already installed so it will not let me ..even after I have reset the "IsInstalled" subkey to "0" in the registry as Microsoft suggested ...

Here is the exact wording in the Outlook Express task box that pops up when I try to aces my mail ....

“An attempt to allocate memory failed. The system is out of memory. Account: 'Mich54', Server: 'mail.myvine.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x8007000E”

Another person (ISP Help Support) said he felt it was caused by a corrupted or missing "dll" file keeping Outlook Express from fully opening properly ... that is why I tried to reload Outlook Express and Internet Explorer .. but for some reason Windows won't let me ... This same tech at my second ISP support said I needed to run XP’s version of scandisk and then defrag my hard drives to free up space on them.

Ran Disk Clean Up on both Hard Drives ... let it remove any file it suggested ... then ran “Error Checking” on both drives (found No Problems) followed by Disk Defragmentor on both drives (even though it said I did not need to defrag)... All went exactly as I expected ..OK.

Now have:

Disk "C" (Master Drive) 28.6GB Total 20.1GB Free
Disk "G" (Slave Drive) 27.9GB Total 19.9GB Free

I use my "G" Drive to store my emails from Outlook Express on but this is how I have had it set up for over a year and until last week every thing was working just fine ....

I also did a restore to a previous date over a month ago (before this problem started) and although WinXP says restore was successful, I still get the same error when ever I try to download emails from my second ISP.

Error Message:
An attempt to allocate memory failed. The system is out of memory. Account: 'Mich54', Server: 'mail.myvine.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x8007000E

Which showed up after receiving 28 emails from my first ISP and 5 out of 42 emails from my second ISP ... One thing that may help identify this problem is ...

As long as I only have a few emails (usually less than 7) on my second ISP server the error message will not happen .. and it doesn't seam to matter how many emails I have on my first ISP ...

Please let me know if you need additional information to help me solve this problem ... I can still access and read my emails from my ISP's online mail sites so this is not a life or death problem just a very inconvenient one ...

Hope this makes sense ... if not please let me know what other information you need to help me solve or correct this problem.

Thank You,
Micheal

You could try to compact all your folders - this may fix it. Another way is to move your .dbx files to a temp location then import them back in (choose from a store directory).

Thank for the reply ... I did try under Outlook Express to change the "Save Emails In" location hoping this would fix the problem but sadly it did not seam to make any difference at all ... so I reset the "Save in Location" back to the old one ...

1. Can you tell me how to move them without taking the chance of loosing them? or How can I back them up to a Zip-Disk or CDR Disk so I will not loose them?
2. Then how for get them back into Outlook Express (Folders & Messages) without taking a chance on loosing them because some to the info in those emails would be very hard to get back ... That is why I do not save them on my Main Hard Drive .. in case I ever need to reload Windows for some reason.

Have you tried the compact all folders option yet? I'd try that first.

Go to the folder where all the .dbx files are, and copy all the files in the folder to someplace safe, but NOT to a CD-R. Then delete all the files in the folder.

Open OE, use the import/export wizard. Import messages from OE6, from a store directory. The store directory is the folder where you copied them to.

First I want to thank everyone for their assistance and help in this problem ...

Now for an update and additional questions:

I made a new storage folder for my Outlook Express (OEx) mail on my Main Hard Drive .. set it as a default with only the folders OEx wanted then tried to download my mail and it seamed to work just fine .. I then used OEx to import my old folders and messages to the new storage location ... it said it found two folders it could not import because of "Damaged or Protected Files in those folders" ... which I don't really understand .. well maybe damaged but not protected .. I have never protected any of my mail folder ... but it does seam to be working OK again ...

BTW .. just compacting the folders did not seam to change the problem ...

So with that cure seaming for now any way to have corrected the error, Can any one here offer any suggestions on what may have actually been the real problem? Does it seam to any one else besides me that my 2nd HD may be going bad? Is there a program or test I can run on it to see if I need to be planning to replace it? Should I be moving my file off it to a CD or my main HD just in case?

Thanks Again,
Micheal

Thanks!

@GLC:

Just wanted to say Thanks for the response you posted regarding backing up all the .dbx files.

Having searched high and low and found loads of threads saying I must be out of disk space (despite having over 20Gb spare), I tried your solution for a customer who was having this exact problem, and it worked.

I actually signed up so i could say Thanks.
