Trillian is designed as a multiclient application. It allows you to run AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo along with IRC through one interface. To run any of the instant messengers, you must have the appropriate accounts already.

BTW, you don't have to have those programs to open accounts you can use with Trillian later. That would defeat the purpose of the multimessenger app. Trillian itself allows you to open accounts in those services.

I'm a total newb with IM programs. Thought I'd give Trillian a try to chat with a friend that has Windows Messenger. With Trillian, do I have to make an MSN account to chat with him? If I want to chat with someone on AOL, do I have to also make an AIM account? Thx.

Yes, and yes. Trillian does it for you, you don't have to download the other messengers or even go to their websites.
