AVi. and Mpeg to DVD????

I just installed a DVD writer to my cpu and now Im ready to try and burn DVD's.........but when I try and put my movie files which are in Mpeg and AVI format it says no compatable files found?????? what program do I need to encode these files to the right format?

couple of ways:
1. you can buy a dvd-player that can play DIVX/XVID, like LG's LDA-530 or
rj800 then you just write the mpegs and avi to dvd disks.
2. you can use softeware to convert the Mpegs and AVIs to DVD format
-----the simple easy and free way to convert mpeg and avi to dvd format is to use a free program call DIVXtoDVD by VSO then burn it to dvd with NERO or similar programs.(note no menus or chapters)
----- having menus and chapters will involve a lot of work with video editing and authoring softwares before it's burnable.
