Google Earth

http://earth.google.com/

Tour the world with satillite imagery!

Pretty neat stuff. The program is about a 10MB download and streams images off of the net in a similarly like google maps.

I was just about to post that too. It's pretty neat. It looks like it uses Google's satellite imagery, but you can tilt it and fly around like you are Superman.

What I find most intriguing is the use of the Firefox/Gecko browsing engine used by Google. From Tools > Web .. it's a Gecko browser. It doesnt seem to use the default browser installed on the computers as well.

I can see my house from here.

Actually, the image has to be recent as in the last 2 years because I had to have a tree cut in my front yard that is not on the image.
==edit=====
actually, looking around the city found new buildings on this that are less then a year old.

The program is amazing.

Don't stop at your houses, check out the pyramids in Egypt, the Vatican, Niagara falls, London, Paris, Disney World, etc, etc.

Google Earth Plus has GPS capability but I'm not sure how useful that would be on a trip because the computer has to connected to the interent to download the content as you move around.

Wow! I've only played around with this for a few minutes, but I'm already impressed. I've just checked out my area so far, and it's crazy to see all these houses I know and my schools, etc. from this type of view.

yes i got this a while back from a friend, it so scary to think that the ppl who have your address can actually SEE where you live now just by typing in your address, so to all my fellow pcmechanicers dont give your address out to anyone now.

I'd say that's a good idea regardless of whether or not people had access to technology like this. Unless of course it's a person/institution that needs your address.

The way I found it is by typing in Giza, Egypt in the Fly to location. Once the map locates al Jizah (Giza), try looking to the south west and you should see the Sphinx marked out. Zoom in on that location.
There might be a simpler way.

Anybody with $$ can get even higher resolution images. Satellite imagery is commercial these days; it's no longer limited to the realm of U.S. and Soviet spy satellites that periodically dropped 35mm film catridges back to the ground. Satellite imagery is very useful for agriculture, among other things.

Ooops my mistake... I spend time looking for Area 51 and then realize they have a direct link to it on the left side built into the software.

That's because I screwed up, it should be 29 degrees instead of 20; and there is also more than one 29 degrees, so go to Egypt (Cairo) and find the spot near there

I believe Google Earth is what used to be the Keyhole Earthviewer program which required a subscription to use. When Google bought Keyhole I new they would make it free eventually.

Speaking of Area 51- if you look north of the site there are groups of green round things- anyone know what those are? (don't forget to reorient the map by hitting the north button).

In case someone here hasn't tried this - check out the directions between 2 locations. And then press the Play button below it to get it going. It's just too cool!
