Angry Fire How to TOTALLY get rid of Quicktime

I want to delete Quicktime from my computer and NOT have it come back.

I have used the uninstall that comes with it, did a search for Quicktime files and deleted them, went into the msconfig start-up and removed the .exe files and still, after a couple of hours it reinstalls itself on the system.

Does anyone have a link to something that would know what registry entry is the suspect in this?? I did a google search and tried all of the things I could find there but it still keeps coming back and I want it GONE AND NOT RETURN.

The uninstaller should have uninstalled the quicktime package. Sounds like you have some rougue spyware running rampant. Try scanning your computer using adaware, spybot and MS Anti-spyware.

Thought about that also. Have done the following.

Used the uninstall from quicktime, did a search for all quicktime orphan files and deleted them, looked in Win/Sys32 folder for any remaining QT files and deleted the qtlog file, went to startup in msconfig and unchecked anything that had a qt reference, ran regclean, emptied the recycle bin and sat back. Also ran all spyware and adware programs that I have (5), ran hijackthis log to see if there was anything in there (not).

Quicktime has reinstalled itself 4 times today. Went through all of the google search references, seems that others have had this same problem, went to apple but all they showed in the faq were the uninstall for win3.11 and win95.

Ran AVG also and came up clean.

I frequent a forum related to Radio Control Helicopters. It is maintained very well and they have not had a virus or spyware problem in the past. Not to say it is immune but it is VERY well maintained and watched. They posted that they would be changing their video format on the forum to a Quicktime "code" and gave a link to Quicktime 7 (I think it was). They also had a sample video on there for people to look at in this format.

I did the download and chose to then uninstall it. Went through the total uninstall and shut down the machine. Started it back up a few hours later and lo and behold, there was Quicktime again. Did the uninstall again, thought I was OK and a couple of hours later, computer still on, there was Quicktime again and it was set as my primary player. I didn't check anything off on the original install as I use Windows Media Player 10 and am happy with it.

I try to maintain my system in as clean a state as I can and don't like to have this kind of program invading it. I know others have Quicktime and use it regularly but I don't need or want it so should be able to get rid of it.

You need quicktime to watch the videos, so every time you go there and don't have it, you download the quicktime plug-in.

I understand that. Have decided that I don't need to watch the videos on that site that bad to go through all of this trouble with Quicktime. Too much of a hassle for the benefit. I don't need programs that take over my computer THAT bad.

do you have itunes? if you do you'll need to get rid of it first as it is dependent on quicktime, at least on the Mac it is so I imagine windows is the same.

I think I finally got it now.

Found some registry files that it did not clean out during the unistall. Fixed them and it has not come back since.

I guess I spoke too soon, it has come back again. VERY FRUSTRATING!!!

I don't need quicktime for anything and now I really don't want it as it has become so invasive and automatically set ifself as the default media center without my consent.

No, I do not nor did I have itunes.

I have never known quicktime to install itself or be invasive like you're describing.

You probably have a "always yes" setting turned on somewhere to accept the download.

Install QuickTime Alternative and be done with it.

While you are at it, install Real Alternative too.

I'm at my wit's end with this one. I used 2 different uninstallers and it has come back again. I've never had a program that did this on this computer.

If there is an "always accept downloads" turned on somewhere in the system it is something that was not there by my hand. It had to have ridden in on the Quicktime download.

I don't even know where to start looking.

Have run spyware, adware, antivirus and registry cleaning programs till I'm blue in the face since last Thursday. Might just have to reformat the partition to clean this mess up.

If you install the QT Alternative, it shouldn't happen any more because the codecs will all be there. QT files will play in Media Player Classic, which looks like the old WMP 6.4.
