windows media player crashes with DVD

hi
A friend of mine has a P4 2.4G with a Toshiba DVD SD-M1712 ,OS XP. When he inserts a DVD the intro sometimes starts and then the message "WMP encountered a problem... and will shut down". As far as I know it was supposed to say it does not have the right codec and not even start the DVD. Anyway I uninstalled the WMP9 and installed WMP10 and the same problem appears. I thought it was something to do with the DVD-rom but uninstalling and reinstalling it didn't help. Any new ideas will be welcomed.

Is the DVD a commercial( store brought)?
sometimes, windows players can't play copy-protected Dvds.
You probably need something like "ANYDVD" ( cant explain more, forum rules) loaded before playing it.
