How do I stop programs from starting up I don't want too?
When I fire up my new laptop, ICQ Lite starts up, MSN Messenger starts up, and so do a few other items I would like to get rid of.
I've searched through the options of the programs themselves and can't find a way to stop all of them from starting up all at once. Do I have to play with the registry, and if so, how do I go about doing that without screwing anything up? |

Go to msconfig through run in startup. There will be a tab for startup, just uncheck the programs you don't want to start at boot.

That should work, but when the program is opened it might reactivate that check box if the program is told to run on boot in the options.
In MSN Messenger, in the main window that lists all the contacts, click Tools>Options>General Then the first line should read Automatically run Messenger when I log on to Windows. Uncheck that box. If you look around in the Tools or Options of the other programs, I'm sure you'll find a similar option to remove the run on boot command.

You could also try running HijackThis and checking and "fixing" the entries. All changes made by HijackThis are theoretically permananent, although they can be undone with some difficulty using the program.

I definitely stopped a few messaging programs as well as some other annoying ones from lagging my PC after I fired it up. Appreciate all the help!

Glad to hear you found a solution. Often times people forget to tell us if everything worked out.
