Really slow windows installation

I am pulling my hair out working on a Toshiba tecra 8100 laptop. P3 about 500mhz (I'm busy with it so can't find out at this moment in time) 256Mb RAM.
Windows 2000 Pro upgraded from Win98. At first it had an error at startup saying NTLDR is missing. I tried replacing NTLDR and NTDETECT but had no joy. Tried re installing 2000 but on re boot I got the same message. Used Win98 to format disc and tried to install WIN98. Half way through got message saying some VxD file was missing so I checked the memory. Removed memory in slot one and swapped it with memory in slot 2. Windows starts to install but it comes up 204 minutes to install. I used a write protected start up disc to FDISK/MBR incase it was a boot sector virus but it's still the same. Please help

Have a quick read of this... see if any of it is relevant

I've got rid of the NTLDR is missing error and I'm reverting back to WIN98. It's the fact that the estimated time of install is 204 minutes and even disc checking is very very slow that's concerning me now. I'm going to leave it to install while I go out and see what it's like when the install finally completes.

You may have faulty ram or a hard drive that's ready to go. I'd zero fill the hard drive and start over.

One of the memory chips was faulty ( It had 2x 128MB) I've tried using the one good and another 128 from a known good system. I've also tried another hard drive. Still really slow. I ran CrystalCPUID as I read on Toshiba website that the CPU frequency has been known to change from 100mhz to 51mhz, but it showed it running at 600Mhz. I checked windows system monitor and everything seemed ok there. I think I was just expecting too much from a pretty old laptop. 4hrs to install windows 98 and slower file access times than the average Pentium 2 desktop. Never mind. Thanks for the advice.

Are you starting the install from DOS or are you booting off the cd? If from DOS, is RamDrive loading off your startup diskett?

It almost sounds like the processor cache is zapped or disabled.
