Crappy DVD playing

ok, i downloaded four media programs....i have winmedia which of courrse will not play my DVD's because of the decoding necessary. I have Nero, DVD direct, VLC, PCI Friendly (but that freezes up everytime so i dont use it). I get terrible blurry picture on each program...any fixess?

EDIT: it played fine on the other computers, on mine its pretty grainy and the colors are distorted.

The DVD drive itself is not the problem. It's only the decoding. Have you tried PowerDVD or WinDVD ? They are two of the best DVD playback softwares.

Cyberlink is no program, it's the name of the company. What you mean is PowerDVD, and nope, it's not freeware.

Well, if PowerDVD fails, then I'd say it's the drivers. Have you installed the latest drivers ?
Can you maybe make a screenshot with PowerDVD, so that we can see what it looks like ?
Also, the blurriness. . does it appear in both fullscreen and window mode ?

It's "C" in PowerDVD.
If you mean Windows, it's PrtScr. It doesn't capture the hardware overlay, though.

It's a part of the graphics chip to take stress off the CPU. The video itself will be overlayed over the desktop right before it goes to the monitor, and the Windows' screenshot function doesn't capture it.

Paste it in Paint or whatever picture editing application you use.

Then I'd say it's the graphic drivers. Have you installed the newest ones ?

Have you installed any codec packs on the problematic PC ? If so, get rid of them, they can mess up these things.

No, I don't think so. As long as you didn't install a codec pack yourself, it should be fine.
Anyway, now that you installed PowerDVD, Windows Media Player can playback DVDs as well. Enter the options of WMP, go to the Performance tab, and move the video acceleration slider all the way to the left and click ok. That will disable the hardware overlay for WMP. Try to play a DVD with WMP, then, and see if you still get the problems.

Dscaler is very popular at the AVS Forums. It is free and many say it produces a better picture than any other DVD software. It's really more like a codec pack. Once installed Windows Media Player will play DVD's. Most people choose to use BSplayer but I think WMP works fine.

If you have an Nvidia video card, go back to the 71.89 drivers. The 77.72's have issues like this.

Download the 71.89's from Nvidia's driver archive, uninstall the current drivers and install the new (old) ones.
