CPU very unstable
Hi Guys,
I am experiencing auto shut down by the pc. Especially when I try to retrieve messages from Outlook Express. Sometimes, it does not allow Outlook Express to receive mail. I've checked with my ISP and they said try siwthcing off the firewall and you can get your mails again. I did that and it is ok for the day. However, the next day I have same problems. I have done a hijact this on my pc and hope you gurus can guide me please. If you computer is shutting down by itself, what CPU are you using and what do the temps look like?

CPU is unstable
Hi Forceflow,
I am using Intel Pentium 4 and my pc temperature is around 75 degrees celsius. I suspect I have virus that is on my hard disk that my Norton AV is not able to detect. I do updates daily. Tonight I am not able to send or receive may mails. I switch off the Firewall and it allows the mails to be sent and receive. Please advise how do I correct this as it has been this way for the past few days. Thanks for your kind assistance. Ginza |

75 degrees C is way too hot, the CPU is shutting down to save itself. Check the fan on the CPU to see if working or if the HSU is loose.

Heatsink fan or heatsink unit - its the unit on top of the processor that disperses heat.
I'm not sure if an overheat is the problem or not - but quite possibly the case. What core is it, just curious? I know a friend who had a loose heatsink on a Celeron D that was running at around 90'C before it would reboot. Make sure the heatsink on the processor is tight, and then let us know.

CPU is unstable
Hi guys,
Have checked on the fans and all of them are running. I dare not touch the heatsink unit as I know I did not do anything to it previously. The only place that I touch on it was the clearing of the CMOS previously. I just went through the PC health and it read like this. CPU Warning Temperature - 75 degrees C CPU Temperature - 48 degress C System1 Temperature - 45 degrees C Do these mean my temperature is normal now? Thanks for all the help and please advise. Ginza |

48 Degrees is decent for a prescott core. If yours is a northwood core, please let us know - Northwood's should not run that hot.

Are those temperatures you see in the BIOS? Also, can you list your full sys specs including the core (Northwood/Prescott) and clockspeed (x.x Ghz) of the processor?

CPU is unstable
Hi Kram8806,
How do I get to the core? I have done a hijackthis log on this page. I am again experiencing auto shutdown by my pc and it has the same error messages the past few days. It read as BIOS ROM check sum error. Deleting Floppy drive A medium..... INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER When I press enter without the System Disk, it comes back with tthe same message. I re-boot the pc and het the delete key till I reach the BIOS Setup. After I run through the Setup, it reboots to Windows and I can then serve the Net without further distabance for the day. But tomorrow I am not sure. Please help.....I am crying ... Ginza |

This sounds like a weak power supply, not an overheat.

overheat
I have a P4 3.0 mhz multi-thread ... I think .....
Anyway, I get the PC to shutdown and warn me about overheating also. It only happens when I try to scan my PC with Norton's. I have SystemWorks 2005 ... it even happened when I tried their online scan. Seems odd to me that this is the only time. My first thought is virus. |
