Norton ghost 9 and "incremental" backups
Anyone here have trouble with ghosts incremental backups. Most of the time they arent true incremental backups but base backups instead. Any ideas why this is?

Nevermind, I just answered my own question.
From symantec's website: Some utilities can cause a large number of changes to a drive over a very short period of time. Most common among these are defragmentation utilities. When run, a defragmentation utility will move a large number of sectors, easily passing the threshold at which the Symantec program determines it is necessary to create a new base image. How you fix the problem depends upon how you use your defragmentation utility: Manual or scheduled defragmentation If you manually defragment your hard drive regularly, or have it scheduled to run at certain times, you should schedule the backup job so that it creates a new base image immediately after the drive is defragmented. The number of incremental backups made will depend upon the frequency of your backups and how frequently you defragment your drive. Background defragmentation If you use a utility that defragments the hard drive continuously in the background, you will find it difficult to make any incremental backups. The constant changes to the drive result in base images nearly every time that you run a backup job. Unfortunately, there is no solution to this other than to schedule your defragmentation for a regular interval, and understand that the interval between base images will match your defragmentation schedule. So basically if you degrag regularly then it will do a base backup as opposed to a true incremental. For me this is a pain becuase it takes well over an hour to back up the 89 gigs of data on my comp. Ghost 9 is great for cloning hard drives but is horrible for incremental backups. |
