Opinion on doing a repair install after a HW upgrade

Interesting thought that has been bugging me for awhile, thought id bring it out on the open. I recently upgraded my cely system to a fully fledged a64 setup with an athlon 64 3000+ chip, and an asus a8v board. now my question/opinion doesnt really pertain to the hw, but rather to how this affects windows. I remember reading that after an upgrade, its generally a good idea to run a repair install of windows so it can delete the info on the old hardware and bring in the new. Now I tried this, but only found myself running into more problems then it was worth. The system was actually running SLOWER then with the cely! So, after snapping and deciding to re-format the drive and start fresh, all the problems went away. The conclusion I made was that the repair install trick works but to a certain degree. Your thoughts on this?

I have usually found that transplanting hard drives with an established OS from one set up to another (unless they are almost identical) is usually teamed with "issues". As painful as it is, a new HDD with the old as a slave, or backup and reformat with fresh install is always better and doesn't make the new rig seem like a cranky bucket of bolts.

Makes you appreciate the build more anyway; to see it with a squeaky clean install, before you end up choking and clogging it up with apps and files.

Yeah I also had those thoughts. like saying youre gonna put the dusty/dirty air filter from an old furnace into a new one you just installed. (BTW, if that sounded corny, forgive me, i dont do well on metaphors. lol).
