PC to PC File Transfer Through USB

Hiya folks,

Last night, I bought one of these USB file transfer cables (not from this site, just my local store) to see how simple it would be to link 2 systems for transferring files between systems. The cable seems to work quite well and I have been able to connect the systems (i.e. see one system's drives from another), but the software that came with it is EXTREMELY unstable! Every time I try to perform any action in their software, called "USB Super Link" it freezes and I have to restart both systems . I have yet to be able to actually transfer a file .

1. Could a link between a USB 2.0 system (from my sig) and a USB 1.1 system (PIII) cause the instability?

2. Is it possible to use other free software from the web to operate the cable and initiate the link?

One of the systems I'm attempting to link is the one from my signature. The other is a PIII Slot 1, Asus P3B-F, 256MB PC100. This system is actually OC'ed from 600MHz stock to about 785MHz. Don't know if that would affect file transfers or not.

Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks all,
Stryker

never actually used them cable transfer kits... mainly due to problems like the one you're having, i always use the software that came with windows XP CD, it backs-up all your files and settings automatically and stores it in a file of your choice then you just burn the file to disk and copy it to your new PC, then run the wizard again and it will put all your files and settings back onto your new pc how you like, or you could try using a cloning tool to create an exact copy of the hard drive you were using to get files from, OR you could just put the old hard drive in the new PC and copy the files from the other drive to your new one, sorry i never actually answered your question but i find USB file transfer VERY unreliable...

The problem with using a CD or moving the HDD itself is that I'm transferring files quite frequently. Again, the cable seems to work... it's just the software that is poor (as far as I can tell, anyway).

Anybody have a software recommendation?

Another option I suppose would be to connect the 2 systems through my hub that I use to share the internet connection. Unfortunately, I'm a networking idiot and haven't setup a home network before! Would the networking be easy enough between WinXP Pro and Win2000 Pro that I should go that route instead?

Thanks again,
Stryker
