Lockdown time!
Hi guys
Looking for a bit of software advice here. I'm in the process of installing a computer designed for public use in a Post Office. This PC is designed purely for internet access. I've been looking into a variety of cyber-cafe software but I've come to the conclusion that these are overkill for our needs (using a server/client system). Ive also realised that the cheaper ones that alter the Windows shell are more trouble than theyre worth for administration purposes, and the ones that provide their own shell too expensive! So basically, I was wondering if anyone knew of some 'lockdown' software, preventing the usual accessing of drives/control panel, display control, cntrl+alt+delete and right click functions. The basic idea is for high security and low maintainance, as I shan't be abe to attend to this system very often! Thanks guys. Freakitchen

I would suggest using XP Pro, and then configure the security you want using gpedit.msc (Group Policy Editor). This will do everything that you're looking for and more. Of course, I dont think you can specifically disable Right Click, but you can disable nearly every right click function that can cause any system change, or access any secure system location.

Thanks for the response!
Had never even heard of that tool, i'll certainly give it a try. Just thought...does it exist on Win2K Pro, as thats what this system is running Freakitchen |

Yes it does, sorry I thought you were on the XP tree. I just dont think that XP Home has it, but I could be wrong. Win2k certainly has it. Check out: START > RUN > gpedit.msc ; I dont know the differences between XP Pro and 2k's version; but you might find some really good sec.policies you could use. For example check out: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar settings.

This looks just like what I need, Statica, thanks for that.
Obviously, a good play around is in order here...am I right in thinking that these settings (under the User Configuration menu) are account specific? Just want to know that by logging in as administrator I bypass any settings I change, and couldnt 'lock myself out' of the machine entirely! Freakitchen |
