Cannot access read-only document

We have a computer running WindowsXP with Word, Excel, and jpg files on it. They can't be opened in any of the appropriate programs. Instead we get the message: Cannot access read-only document abc.xls. Or whatever the file name is. The files also can not be opened across the network from another computer, or copy and pasted to another location.

Any ideas on what could cause this. Out of about 100 files, only 2 or 3 still will open.

That didn't work. I have found out the person using the computer ran a registry cleaner and since then the problem has started. We tried a System Restore, but it did'n't work. I can't think of anything else to try.

Thanks.
