FPS recording software?

I am looking for a software which I can use to benchmark while I am playing game to see how many Frames/second my cards are producing. I noticed a software called Fraps; looks like the purchased version would do what I want, but I would perfer a free software. The free version looks decent too, have any of you had success with the free version?

Any others suggestions would be great.

PS. I would be using this to test the differences in FPS while changeing between differnce AA and AF configurations within SLI such as SLI AA 8 and SLI AA 16 and I do not need a software to make charts or lists or anything I am just going to run the game with it on and watch the FPS and take note of the average FPS over a given time. I hope that all makes sence.

TIA,
RYAN

I've use the free Fraps, but it's limited to about 10 seconds of record time. So, instead of using the "show fps" command of a particular game, you are wanting to record some action, then play it back to analyze?

Well not exactly, I would like it to show FPS, but for ten seconds I couldnt even get my game running or do anything in it to actually grasp an average # of FPS. I guess I can try out Fraps free; does it use lots of system resources and cpu or not?

It's been over a year since I've used it. If I remember right, it has a hot key so you can fire up your game, get to where you want, then start the recording. It has several settings, recording up to 30 fps. It's a pretty "clean" program (at least the version I had) and installs / uninstalls nicely.

Oh, sounds like a great little program, but I know for sure I am getting a lot more than 30fps (at least based of 3d mark 05...) I guess I will keep looking for some software which can record up to a lot high # of FPS.
Thanks again TwoRails

I don't think you find software that'll record the 100+ fps that some games get. But it does let you make a mini movie of your favorite sceens. Sorry I wan't more help

Got your PM ryan124712. Thanks. I didn't mention it above, but the version I have is pretty old. I checked out their site and they have progress the software. Seems like it will make record of FPS up to 999, but it will capture, movie style, up to only 60 FPS (which is pretty good, really).

Here's their FAQ page:

http://www.fraps.com/faq.php

The full version is $37. I didn't find any info on what is crippled in the free version... could have missed it, though.

Tanks TR, That program is doing exactly what I was looking for, uses very little system resources to run while playing a game too.
