Open Office 2.0 Official Released Today!!!

Awesome stuff... Much Better and Faster than OfficeXP-2003... the only thing it is missing is a grammar checker, which I never used anyway.

http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/download.html

Also since the servers are slow get it off Bittorrent, and use a low upload speed. They have plenty of seeds to go around..

Just curious. What makes it better? "Better" is a comparative term so there must be some way to compare features.

It's actually slower than Office 2003, because it's Java-based. However, there is one big advantage -- Office is very expensive, and OpenOffice is free. That's why I'm excited about the 2.0 release; because of te nature of my job, we can't buy normal software and therefore other than Windows 2000 (which we get through the Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher program for $5 a license), all the software we install is free (an most is open-source because of the less-restrictive license).

Does it have an update from the previous version?
I also like that it is free; but I can tell that it is slower than MS Office in opening files and what not... but not a big issue when I got it for free and save more money to put toward my hardware.

I downloaded it and installed it on my work computer to see what everyone we give computers to is going to be getting. It looked excellent -- very polished, very MS Office-like. I also like that the uncompressed installer is only 77 MB; the old one was about 140 MB, so it will be easier to fit the new one on the automated install CD I've created.

My girlfriend uses it, I don't... I don't like it, I don't know why, just seems less functional to me (plus it's irritating when people send me the .sxw file instead )

I usally save all my files as both .swx and as windows office files; maybe some people don't know about that function.

What I do is save as > then under file type I do the office file.. Save as again and do it as a OpenOffice file. Note; you will get a little dialog box stating that saving in external formats might take away part of Open Offices formatting; But I have never encountered this.

What is a .sxw format? Also, I got the 2.0 and it asked me where i wanted my database... what is this? I don't need a database. I just put stuff in My Documents.

You have to option of not installing it.
A full explanation of Base is here : http://www.openoffice.org/product2/base.html

Query Google "What is .sxw format ?" (without the quotes) and save one of the PDF files for a complete explanation.

I think it's pretty much common knowledge that zdnet is "owned" by MS in the sense that they are heavily dependent on MS advertising $$. I'm not surprised that zdnet would run a negative article about OO 2.0; they are very anti open source in almost all of their articles. And this isn't even an article; it's some guy's blog. There is also no indication as to how ram usage was measured; MS Office is known to preload a ton of junk so it's permanently in ram. Although, OO will undoubtedly have a bigger memory footprint than MS Office, I doubt this is an accurrate measurement. His startup times and cpu usage also seem way out of line from my experience.
