Strange Reg Problem
On my other comp, everytime I now start it up it comes up with a message at the log-in screen that says something like 'An entry was missing in the registry. An alternate entry has been recovered. The recovery was successful' although I can't be exact because the computer then resets itself in about 1 second.
Its very unlikely to be a virus, as it hasn't been even physically connected to the internet for about 2 months. I believe that it could have something to do with a disk defrag that I done when I was on it the time before, as the problem started after I turned it on the time after i defragged it (If that makes any sense) Thanks for any help EDIT: Exact message was 'One of the files that was containing the systems registry data had to be recovered. The recovery was successful.' Last edited by ror_b211; 10-23-2005 at 08:34 AM. |

Just found some info on MS's website:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;843426 Fortunately I have the SP2 disc, but getting it on the computer is going to be a challenge. I'm still not sure that this is the problem though, its a strange one, and i'm worried that after installing SP2 (if i get that far) the problem will still be there. |

I found another, similar, bit of info that also recommends SP2.

hmm the problem seems to have just disappeared. I think my PC's generally being annoying at the moment, I've had a variety of annoying messages recently.
After a while the message still came up but the PC didn't reset, it just went into windows as normal. Now, the message has disappeared and everythings normal again. I might install SP2 just to be sure though. Thanks for the info, Pam123 I think I had a combination of the two issues. |

Please Install SP2, for security sake.

You had a damaged registry file (probably the system hive) and it finally found the right backup to restore.
