Copying DVD's

I am building a pretty decent DVD collection and recently 2 of my dvd's were ruined (by my kids, not cause they were used as drink coasters).

Is there software around that I can DL or purchase to make back-up copies of my dvd's? I have not found anything in Compusa, etc...

Thanks.

There used to be one. . . known as DVD Decrypter. You need it to rip and burn a DVD.

If you then also need to transcode a dual layer DVD so that you burn the backup to a single layer DVD, you also need DVD shrink.

Both programs aren't under development anymore, but using google you can still find sites that host them.
These 2 programs are the only one you need.

If that does not work for you, there is a program out call Alcohol 120% that allows you to burn images of DVDs, Games ect. on you your hard drive then lets you mount them to a "Virtual drive" (installed with the program - its like a make-believe DVD Drive) on your computer. This way you can watch them on your computer without the physical DVD.

BUT I am not sure if the image is burnable on to a DVD+RW. Someone else could clarify that.

This programs runs about $70 American.

But I would try DVD Decrypter and Shrink before trying this.

since you legally have the dvds then i can tell.

My favorite setup is using the following method. Personally I like it much better than dvd decryptor then to DVD Shrink

Anydvd to run in background to deCSS the movie automatically as soon as you insert the movie

Open the movie in DVDSHRINK and then you can either just rip the movie or the whole disk (it has built in compression methods so it fits on one disk)

Burn the resulting image with nero or I use Copy2DVD

A longshot, but if you use Linux, dvdbackup and k3b will do this. Both are, of course, freely available.

my method is sort of like this, but i just do it all with dvdshrink. most dvd's will rip without using anydvd, you may have one or two stubborn ones tho. as long as you have nero installed, dvdshrink will rip, compress and burn the dvd all in one step, and if you have a dvd-rom and dvd-rw, it is unattended. otherwise, you will just have to take out the original dvd and put in the blank when necessary. quite handy, really
