Best method/program to rip DVD’s to my computer.

I will be getting a large hard drive soon and I was thinking of putting all my DVD’s on my computer, I have all my CD’s on there so why not have my DVD collection as well. I have no idea how to go about doing it though, I am sure it’s not a simple process with copy write protection and all. What program(s) would you recommend for this task?

As the owner of the DVDs it's your legal right to make copies for your own use.
However, the DMCA makes it illegal to circumvent copy protection.
I won't close this thread unless someone actually posts instructions for DVD copying.

unless you have a very large hard drive, you won't get the whole collection on it.
playing a dvd in a system that has a capture card in it should be able to capture the movie to the hard drive ok, but you will not be able to burn it to a dvd blank because of the copy protection.
I am able to capture movies from the tv tunner card from tv and from a dvd player playing through the capture card of the same device.
meanning the ati video card that has the dvd capture built in.
also I can do the same thing with vhs tapes.
all of which is perfectly leagle.

Try researching the software called Alcohol 120%. It allows you to create watchable/burnable images of your DVDs or games.

This software is perfectly legal, its just a matter of what images you burn on DVD-R's thats questionable. It's up to the individual to step over the line.

he did not state that he wanted to burn copies at all, just place them on his hard drive.

I understand. Just with all the talk of piracy, i was just trying to state the legality of the software.

Alcohol 120% works very well. I have used the trial version. However, newer Ubi Soft games (such as Far Cry) will not run with that software installed.

DVD Decryptor has been discussed in these forums many times. I have never heard anyone here question it's legality when used for legitimate personal backups or ripping to a hard drive.

If personal backups are legal but getting around copy protection (required for personal backups) is not then what's the point of the former?

If you want to e-mail your senator and take this up, be my guest.
But, for now, this stupidity is law ( To quote Charles Dickens : The law is an ass.).

That's before the lawyers landed.
I't's now questioned and there's another ( after all the others) legal fight on the dockets.
As for the point : Catch 22.
