Game crashes repeatedly

I have a friend with a new Dell 4600. He just purchased and installed the game Pirates. For no apparant reason the game will crash back to the desktop at random. There does not seem to be any consistency to the problem. There is no error message displayed, nothing. It just crashes back to the desktop every time. We have tried updating every driver in the system, making sure he has all his needed updates for Windows, and the problem persists. What else could I try?

What background apps are running? They could be interfering - F@H would do the same thing to me.

are you talking about the (MicroProse pirates)? because many games from MicroProse will do the same for me, such as worms armagedon, rollercoastertycoon and civilization

We tried updating the game with the latest patch, and it ran worse than before.

He has 512MB of RAM.

Video issues, sound issues, could be the game is not compatible with SP2. What are the machine's specs?
