Problem opening files over network
Hello,
I have the following problem. Since a while ago I noticed that when I wanted to open files directly from the internet (for instance .doc file which opens in a Word window [not in the browser]) programs say that they can't find the file at the location c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temporary internet files\content.ie5\cteroh6z\filename.*.* It seems as if the file isn't being saved at a temporary folder where the "to be used program" is going to try to open the file. Can somebody help me to get rid of this problem? At the moment I always need to save it manually to a specific location to be able to open a file. It's a bit annoying and it's something I refuse to reinstall my Pc for .Hope someone can help me out here, thanks in advance, PiC |

Have you tried clearing your cache?

Thanks very much. Didn't know that could possibly be the problem. However it was, since clearing the cache and temp files did the trick.
Is there some kind of limit on the size of the temp files from the explorer? Is this limit adjustable? Again many thanks, PiC |

In IE, Tools...Internet Options...then the Settings button under Temporary Internet files will let you set the size of the cache. Windows sets it by default to a ridiculously high number, leading to problems. In reality, 50 MB is more than you should ever need, and you can set it to far less without really noticing.

If you have broadband, you should go into internet options, advanced - and check the box to delete temporary internet files when the browser is closed. This will help keep the cache from getting full.

I'll consider that option.
Strange, I noticed that the following problem remained. It happens when I'm accesing another PC from my own. When I try to open a document on another computer in the network I get the same kind of message I mentioned earlier. Is there some kind of cache for the network that has to be emtied? PiC |

Yes there is a setting for it. Firstly you can control the automatic caching by going to the shared folder on the server (or the computer sharing out the file) and right clicking on it > Properties > Sharing tab > Caching button.
You can also view and manage the cache for offline network files by selecting a shared folder on the client computer, and going to Tools > Folder options > offline files. You can now empty the cache or increase the cache. Read more here: http://www.quepublishing.com/article...p?p=30421&rl=1 |

Thanks for the reply Statica. Sorry for the late reaction. Think the notification mail slipped me by. But this one was still in the back of my mind. I'm gonna try your solution.
Btw. It seems to only happen to documents I try to open with a MS Office or Open Office. Opening .txt documents with notepad is no problem. Strange... Well I'll dive into it when I have some time on my hands. But the problem seems to be with the other computer. It's only a P1 100MHz with 48 MB RAM so that might explain it .Thanks, PiC |
