Saving an Internet Film Clip
I saw a film clip at a web site that I'd like to save on my PC. The clip was not downloadable, so I found it in the Temporary Internet Files folder and tried to save it.
When I double-clicked it within the Temp folder, it played fine using Windows Media Player 10.0, although I did get a message "Running a system command on this item might be unsafe". When I dragged the file to the desktop, the fille extension changed and the clip was no longer recognized by any software I have. The name of the file in the Temp folder was: doodah.wmv#0;1.000;0;0;1:2;5:2 When I dragged it to the desktop, the filename and extension changed to: doodah[1].dat The FileType was VCD Wrapper, but sometimes Windows doesn't really know the actual file type and takes a guess. I Googled VCD Wrapper and found that it is encoded in MPEG-1 format and stored on a CD in a specific format. According to a Glossary I found, VideoCDs are rare in the West and are usually illegal copies or porn movies. Well, if oyster-shucking can be considered porn, then there are some real weirdos out there. ;o) Is there a way I can save this file so I can view it at will? Thanks EdP |

If there was no option to download the video clip, then the author/creator/whatever doesn't want you to download it, they only want it to be streamed on their website. If you really wanted it, you could use FRAPS to capture the video.

Did you try right-clicking and selecting "Save Target As"?

Thanks for the replies.
HiHo: There was no "Save target as" in IE or "Save link as" in FF. ror: The clips are not critical enough for me to spend money on software I'll probably never need again. I'll make notes. ;o) I just thought there was something I could do to those files in the Temporary Internet Files folder that would allow me to save them. Thanks again for the quick responses. EdP |

try doing this. download vcdgear then in the program there is an option to convert .dat to mpeg. I have done it numerous times becuase vcd is big here in mexico, so i know if it is a vcd file then vcdgear should work.

Thanks, doobie
Apparently theres no MPEG stream in the .dat file. VCDGear error message "Could not locate MPEG stream". Thanks for the recommendation, though - NetGear may come in handy for other tasks in the future. EdP |

have you tried renaming the extension to mpeg? If it works you can watch it but sometimes when you burn it on to a cd it doesnt work on a dvd player.
