Operating System transfer help
I'm getting ready to change my 80 and 40gb IDE hardrives and I am going to put in one 250gb Sata2 hard drive. I'm wondering if I can just move all of my files from the 80gb hard drive (which contains my OS) or do I have to use a special program or is there no way? BTW I am using XP home service pack 2.

you could mirror your hard drive, using Norton ghost

After you install XP and all the necessary drivers and programs on the new hard drive install the older one on the ide connector and transfer the files you want off of it.
That way you can take your time and not have any of the old registry entries hanging about.

My new hard drive came with the software to copy everything over to new drive . Most manufactors have a utility on thier web site to do just that.

Ok, but can I use the program that comes with a different Hard Rive or do I have to use one that comes with it because the one I want to order is an OEM drive so it doesn't have the program.

You can usually just download the program off of that company's website for free. I know you can with Western Digital Drives and old IBM drives I have done that myself and it works well. Or, as Pam suggested you could do a fresh install of XP on the new drive (as long as you have your XP disc), install all your drivers and then install the older drive and copy whatever files you still need using windows explorer. if you have been using the same install of XP you will probably get a nice performance boost by starting over with a new one.

I would reccommend a fresh install too, for the reasons stated above and because you can transfer just the things you want to keep to the new drive and get rid of all of the junk.

But wouldn't a fresh install of Windows require that I reinstall all of my programs because the registry would be gone?

Okay, hold it.
If you have the XP cd you install it on the new drive and trasfer your data files from the older drives at your leisure. There is no need to use the program that comes with the new hdd for this. |

Reinstalling all the programs on a fresh install is actually a better idea in my opinion. If you download the newest versions, you won't have all the incremental upgrades that have accumulated over time taking up space and you can choose to not reinstall stuff that you never use. You will also not have a lot of the debris that programs build up over time like history logs, saved turns in games, and other assorted unneeded files they have generated. As far as the registry, I think it is better to just start with a new clean one, than the old one with all the references to the old hardware. It will be more work and will take longer, but will be a cleaner install than if you just clone the drive.

I think I will just clone the old drive onto the new one and leave it at that, because I am just trying to avoid having to reinstall everything because it would take about 6 hours for me to do that.
