Quick Time Error 46
I have a new system...Dell Pent 4, 3.4 GHZ, 1 GB RAM, Windows XP Pro. My son downloaded I Tunes with the new version of QuickTime (7.0.3).
We have several identities on the system. Everything works fine under my son's identity, but under all the others, when we try to open QUICKTIME, we get "Error 46. Could not load or find the QuickTime Active X control." Any ideas as to what is the problem or what we are doing wrong. It is not open under his ID when we try to open it in another ID... Thank you... |

Uninstall iTunes and then reinstall quicktimes as a stand alone .
Get quicktimes from here : http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html If it works in all profiles, I'm assuming you're all admins with passwords, then reinstall iTunes and you should be good to go. NB : When uninstalling iTunes be thorough anything hanging around will cause trouble so you're emptying temp files as well as looking for any folders still left on the C drive. If you have any doubts run this as well : http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;290301

I had the same problem so I did what you said, and I still can't open Quicktime Player.
When I'm installing or uninstalling, I get the error message too. |

Back up a minute.
Are you telling me that you can't get rid of Quicktime at all? |

I can get rid of Quicktime, but during that process theres 3 error messages.
When I try installing the stand alone installer, theres 3 error messages and I get error 46 when I try opening the player. |

What are the other 3 error messages in addition to error 46?
I have to have some idea of what you're seeing. |

I'm assuming you've backed up whatever iTunes files are in My Music because you're going to do a full scrub as well as a windows installer update.
Post back with your reply and we'll get to it. |

You can't run iTunes without Quicktime so, basically, you're stuck.
The first go round is the uninstall and we're gong to be major nit-picky. Go download this : http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-dow...cleaner4.3.htm Don't do anything other than save it to your desktop. Post back when you're done, I'll keep my e-mail open. |

I saved the installer onto my desktop.
I have an activated Registry Mechanic 5 [PC Tools] installed by the way [I use it frequently] wouldn't AIM be better? Cause I won't have to wait between every reply, and cause I gotta go in like an hour Last edited by Retrac1324; 12-02-2005 at 08:02 PM. |

Okay.
Now you should have both the stand alone quicktime and the iTunes installer downloaded to your desktop as well. If you don't do that now and post back. |

I don't use IM so we can continue this later if necessary.
Just post back your Saturday time, you'll need some. For now move/copy your iTunes library to the desktop ( or another safe place ) and out of the My Music folder. If you've got one of those "involved" My Music folders copy the whole thing to the desk top. You have to get it out of the way. Now, is your Windows installer up to date? If in doubt go here : http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=884016 |

Okay, get ready for you night out and we'll continue this tomorrow.
If you zapped the iTunes library you have lost everything you bought from the music store and everything you transfered to it. It may be possible to get the bought tunes back, Apple is sometimes merciful, but you'll have to re-rip all the others. |

Okay, the question now is : Why are you wasting my time?
Is there some reason I shouldn't dismiss you as a troll? Everyone gets a chance to explain and this one is yours. |
