Graphics in Word seem to turn invisible!?

Here's an odd problem:

When using Microsoft Word, if I draw an autoshape, or insert an image or any kind of graphic, it works fine. But, if I open another window in front of Word and then return to Word, the images have all disappeared. They are still there, but I can no longer see them unless I click where it is to highlight a dotted line around it, and then move or resize the graphic. At this point all graphics on the page become visible again.

It seems to be that whenever another window covers part of an image, the covered part disappears. For instance, if I open the start menu and it goes accross half of the image, when I close the start menu, that half of the image is invisible, until i move or resize it.

I can't figure out why this is? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
