Norton Ghost 2003
I have used Ghost for several years with no problems. A few months back, each time I tried to make an image, the image would be split into two parts. I reformatted my HDD but the problem still continued. I started using Acronis and forgot about Ghost. Yesterday I thought I would give Ghost another shot. I installed it and made an image but when the PC rebooted, it had split into 7 images!
Does anyone have a clue whu this happens? I have 3 PC's and one other has the same problem with Ghost but the third is still good with it.

I had it set to copy to a partition as I have always done in the past but I will be sure and check that when I give it another try.

I tried again and made sure I selected a partition. Still getting multiple images.

Ghost splits the image because of the file size. You can set the size of the split files to match your needs, such as CD or DVD, but it also must match the file system. So, if you're backing up a non NTFS, then the size should not go over 2GB. With NTFS I wouldn't go more than 4GB as then you couldn't get it to fit a DVD, (and I don't think Ghost will go more than 4GB anyway...). The only time I've ever had a one file Ghost image is if the source is that small (like a fresh build or the like).

You may have it set to break it up into CD-sized chunks too - even though you are not using CD's. This is an option - so you can image to a hard drive THEN burn them to CD's.
Why not just continue using Acronis? I personally feel it's a superior tool to Ghost, I've felt Ghost has been very overrated ever since Symantec bought it. |
