AIM: transfering files

Hey, I have a couple videos I have shared in my Instant Messenger folder. The upload speed seems to be capped at 44kbps. I can't seem to upload faster. Is there anyway to increase this? I have 4mb Comcast cable and I know my upstream is higher than 44k. Can I open any more ports or anything? Thanks

As far as I know, there is no transfer cap with AIM. The speed is restricted by either your network (if you're on a network), you net connection, or the other party's net connection.

Also, you may be confusing the KB (Kilobyte) transfer speed with the Mb (Megabit) bandwith allotment.

There's a bit difference between counting with bits and counting with bytes, so make sure you know which is which.

Since ISPs typically use Kb and Mb for referring to bandwith settings, a 4Mb connection would get a peak speed of 512KB/s

I'm sure that it is 44kbps. It took my friend just over 2 hours to get a 315mb video from me. The math comes out right. The only thing that I think could be hindering my speed is that under the transfer settings, I have to set it on AOL Proxy Server only, otherwise a person can't connect to me or do anything. I attached the setting I'm looking at. Could this limit the performance that much? Now that I think of it, I never had to do that setting when I was on 56k. Could it be my router blocking the AIM attempted connections?

That sounds about right, that calculates to 352k up. Uploads are capped at a much lower speed than downloads with all home type accounts. They do this on purpose to discourage the use of servers. If you want faster uploads, you have to pay for a business account.

To confirm, go do a up and down speed test at dslreports.com.

My downstream was rated at 4.1mbps, and my upstream was at 260kbps. I still don't understand why AIM won't upload at that speed or why it won't go higher than 44kbps, I'd be happy with it moving along at 100 but oh well. More comments welcome but I don't think I'll worry about it for now.

If your upstream came out to 260kb/s, then I'd consider yourself lucky to get 44KB/s. Since 260kb = 32.5KB.
