avi playing problems

we have an archos video recorder which we captured video on
we are now trying to play it back on the computer
the video is in avi format
we have divx and all the five videos work in divx
we are then trying to watch them in windows media player
we need them to work in windows media player so that we can distribute them to clients
but only two of them will play in windows media player
the other three will not
they come up and say error playing file
i have all of the codecs up to date and i cant figure out what is wrong
any suggestions

thanks

Then you should convert them to WMV, it's media player's format. Only then can you be sure that it works in media player.
Otherwise it's just a matter of the codecs and filters you have, but if a client does not have it, his media player will fail.
But WMV support is integrated in Media player, therefore you should use it.

Also, to find out which codec is needed to play a certain AVI, use GSpot.

is there any reason that some of them would work and some of them wouldnt
they are all being recorded through the archos video recorder
the actual picture is coming from a boroscope which is plugged into the recorder
the field techs record the video and bring it back
and then we transfer it and watch it
this problem is consistantly happening
when they come back from one job with recorded video some of it plays in windows media player and some of it doesnt
all of it plays in divx
