screensaver software

I apologise if this is in the wrong forum. I figured screensaver, eh, video, maybe audio. Multimedia,,,,
Anyway, I want to make my own screensaver. Put some mpeg's togeather.
Does anyone know of some software that someone less smart then say, Einstein, can use. And if at all possible, free?
I notice while looking at the screensavers I have in my OS (win xp sp2) all have a .scr ext. after them. Do I need software to convert other extensions?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
B

sgtspector'
On one PC I am getting the same error message-- I need to have media player 9. Its a newer PC and has 10. And of course its the one I wanted to make the SS. I emailed a MS news grp for help and will pass it along when I get it, if I get it.
Or, I guess its just uninstall 10 and put 9 bck in.
