Need to buy an OS?
I have a tight budget for my new build and was wondering if I could just load on it an old Windows XP from a different computer instead of buying a new one. Would it still work fine?

XP Home sells for around $90... or for the time being you could use Linux (Ubuntu.. SUSE... etc...) which are free.

If the copy you are talking about is not a distribution with a purchased PC (like a Dell) restore disk and you are removing it from the old PC then yes you can use it on the new.

Call Microsoft
Quote:
You may be able to consider the new build an upgrade from an older computer and get a new product key code by calling Microsoft when you register the installation. The following article talks about it more in depth. Let us know what you find out. http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-200 |
