Well, I've been using DeadAim 4.5 for awhile now in combo with AIM version 5.2.3292. I can't stand the new version, they're making into bloatware. But yeah, DeadAim is pretty cheap, and I think well worth the money. Removes ads, adds transparency, rename everyone on your list to whatever you choose. I don't know what the new AIM is capable of and I think it stole a few of these features but there's no substitute for the classic linear messenger with the DeadAim upgrade in my opinion.

uninstall the viewpoint manager in add/remove programs.
You can also add entries to your hosts file to block AIM ads: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=113836
