Question questions about quality of movies????

is there a software free or pay or inexpensive equipment that can make DVD/AVI/MPEG etc. movies higher quality and higher resolution. I have some video clips and dvd movies that are not that great quality and some are really poor quality just wondering if there is some software or equipment that makes the movie higher quality and bigger size resolution?

I would really appreciate the help!

No, you can't make video higher quality. Higher resolution yes, but it doesn't change the quality, the video would just be scaled.

You can't create information that is not present.

Of course. 100%. It's the only logical way. Otherwise we wouldn't need DVDs. . we could just convert VHS to HDTV. Would be nice.
But, picture information that isn't there, isn't there. You can't create them from void.

yes but how do those dvd companies (like sony or universal) make older movies/shows better quality and put them on DVD format? Some movies are real old like chaplin for example and they are able to make it better quality and add it to dvds.

Their master is far better than DVD. Even HDTV. They clean up the master so it's easier for the MPEG algorithm to compress. They use filters to restore the color, or improve the color (as color degrades in time on the films), and to reduce noise.
Finally, they convert it to DVD, which means a big quality loss. When you compare it to other DVD, it'll be great quality, but comparing to the master, it's far lower. And, since you can't create better quality, you can't convert DVD back to the master. So, for HDTV, they'd use the master again, and not a DVD.

A video clip with the same quality of a 35mm film (as used in movie theatres) would need a resolution of 4096x2048. And if you clean it up and downconvert it to 720x576, the DVD is gonna look great.
That's how they do it. Now if all they had was a VHS tape, they wouldn't be able to achieve that quality.

You mean like improving the colors and reducing the noise ?
It's done with filters.

You can use filters with VirtualDub or AviSynth, for example. That way you can use them for your movies as well.
Reducing noise also means reducing sharpness a bit, so you'll have to play with that a bit to find the best settings.

That way the overall quality will be better, even though a bit sharpness is lost.

yes, I mean when a movie is hard to see (because the quality is poor), I need some software just to clear it up so I can see a little more and not the fuzzyness or those boxes or whatever you'de like to call it.
