Looking for free file move/backup utility
Here's what I want to do: I want to selectively move old files, with directory hierarchy intact, from one drive to another. The files will be chosen by date and (possibly) by extension. There's got to be an easy way to do this or a utility out there, but I haven't found anything that will do this exactly. Any thoughts?

What OS? If you're using Windows check out xcopy (CLI xcopy/?) it will do most of what you've mentioned here.

I checked out xcopy, and it won't work. It can copy files AFTER a date, but not before. Also, it copies files, and I want to move them, i.e. delete them from the source too. I'm trying to move all files older than 5 years old from a network drive to create more free space.

Why not use the Windows "Find" function from your start menu? You can specify date parameters and then cut and paste results from your old drive to your new.
The only thing I'm not sure about is if it will keep the folder structure. Edit: Well here is another option: 1. Copy the entire existing folder to the backup location 2. Run the "Find" function on the backup server and remove anything newer than DateX 3. Vice Versa on the existing server This way you keep the folder structure the same on both. This is kind of going around your elbow... it should work though. Last edited by faulkner132; 01-04-2006 at 01:20 PM. |

It's about 15 GB of files in total; copying them to a temp folder on my local computer and then selectively deleting will also take forever.
I found something that is working, though: Sumation Explorer. |
