.MPGS Not As Long As They Should Be

I have a number of .mpg files that seem to playing inordinately short. They have, for example, a size of 115MB, yet appear as being only 56 seconds long, no matter what program I try to play them in. When I move the time bar to even the center, it brings me to a part that is obviously long after the movie would have 'ended.' AND, even when the movie DOES hit the 'end,' it keeps playing, albeit very choppily. What is going on here?

For the record, I have tried the videos in quicktime, WMP, and winamp, all with the same effect. Any ideas? Thanks!
