Opening Word default settings

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to change the default settings in Microsoft Word so that it will automatically open documents in "normal" view?

You have to change the global template (usually normal.dot) and save it with the exact view you need: http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/SaveViewAndZoom.htm

Keep in mind that these will only happen for documents that you create moving forward. The view setting is stored within the documents itself, so any document that you have saved under a different view, or any document that you receive from another machine will open up to its own specific view.

Thanks for the reply. A friend actually showed me that my documents were actually opening in "reading layout." To allow documents to open in the normal view, I had to go to tools, then options, and then un-select the "Allow starting in Reading Layout" button, which was checked by default.
